| Spring Newsletter 2009 |
|
Resurgam!
It’s spring in Maine, and along with the leaves and flowers, the
Smith College Club is emerging with fresh verve from a period of
inactivity. Health and personal issues among Board members
kept us from meeting or publishing newsletters in the past year.
However, we are pleased to report that in three areas—book
awards, alumnae interviews, and pecan sales—there was no
lapse in activity. See inside this newsletter for details on these
vital Club endeavors.
As our group reorganizes, there are some vacant leadership
positions—notably President and Vice President—to be filled. If
you have ever considered getting involved with the Club, now is
the perfect time. Just think about the incredible potential of 800
intelligent Smith alumnae living together in one beautiful state.
What would you do to connect and engage them?
You have the opportunity to shape the Club’s future.
Please contact any of the Board members listed here with
questions about volunteering. Look for an announcement of the date and location for our fall
meeting and special election to arrive this summer. We hope to see many of you there. Meanwhile, enjoy the season!

Book Awards - Eliza Miller '80
|
Smith Book Awards are given to high school juniors
with outstanding records in academic achievement,
leadership qualities, and concern for others. In 2008,
41 book awards were given in Maine; the recipients’
schools are listed and shown on the map below. This
year, in coordination with the College, the list of
participant schools was trimmed, but at least 30
awards are anticipated. The book award program
continues to inspire students and encourages them to apply to Smith.
Please contact Eliza if you are interested in assisting with the program or presenting awards.

Admissions - Katie Clark '96
|
The admissions liaison here in Maine arranges
interviews for students who apply to Smith but can’t
make it to the campus for an interview. Alumnae
interviewers who meet these articulate, accomplished
applicants report that it’s a pleasure to make their
acquaintance, and no trouble at all to send feedback
to the College.
A record 4,009 women applied for a spot in the Smith
Class of 2013, an increase of 6 percent over last year.
Of those, 102 applicants were from Maine. E-mail Katie to help
interview the applicants for the Class of 2014! |
Pecan Sales - Chris Jackson '63
|
| Pecan sales were as strong as ever this year. After
spending about $3,300 to replenish our supply, we
took in over $6,500, for a profit of about $3,500.
Profits from pecan sales are sent to Smith to support
current students from Maine. However, if you’ve had
your fill of pecans, or you suffer from nut allergies, you
can still support Maine’s Smith students by donating directly to the scholarship fund! |
| Smith Responds to the Recession |
Like all colleges, Smith has been affected by the
downturn in the economy. On April 13, President Carol
Christ announced a budget plan for the College that
would achieve $30 million in permanent reductions by
June 30, 2011. Get details and updates here.
Even in these difficult times, Smith is committed to
meeting students’ full demonstrated financial need.
Scholarship funds are more important than ever. In
response, the Smith Club of Maine announces a
new goal for the scholarship fund.
Help us reach our goal to send $4,000 to the College
at the end of this month. That’s just $500 more than
we’ve already raised through pecan sales, or less than
$1 per alumna living in our state.
